How to Save Money on a Move: 10 Levers Ranked by Payoff

The two biggest savings in our published model come from the same idea: ship less, or ship it with less service. Switching a 3-bedroom, 1,500-mile move from full-service movers to a moving container saves $2,173–$2,898, and switching to a freight trailer saves $4,036–$5,382. Dropping one size class by decluttering saves $1,012–$1,350 on the same route.

Everything else on this list is either smaller or real but impossible to price honestly, and the ranking says which is which.

The first three are the only levers the model prices directly. The rest are ranked by how much of the bill they touch.

1. Switch the service type

The model prices full-service movers at $2.50 per mile, a moving container at $1.80 and a freight trailer at $1.20, before the size multiplier is applied. That is why the container is 28% cheaper and freight 52% cheaper at every distance and every home size.

What you give up is the loading and unloading labor, and with freight, a trailer of your own. The saving is the labor you take on yourself, so it is only a saving if you have the people and the back for it. The options are compared in cheapest way to move across country.

2. Drop a size class by decluttering

The long-distance price is miles × size multiplier × service rate, and the multipliers step up from 1.5 for a studio to 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 2.6 and 3.0 for a 5+ bedroom home. Each step is worth a fixed slice of the bill.

A size class is a proxy for weight, and the surveyor assigns it by what they see on the day. Sell or donate the garage, the spare-room furniture and the boxes you never unpacked last time before the survey, and the estimate lands a row lower. The room-by-room math is in declutter before moving.

3. Local moves: cut the hours on site

Local moves are billed by the hour: crew × hours on site × hourly rate per mover, plus a $75 travel fee in our model. That makes every hour you shave worth the whole crew’s rate, not one mover’s.

The spread column is the money on the table. The hours come down when boxes are packed, sealed and labeled by room, when furniture is already disassembled, when the elevator is booked and when the truck can park at the door.

4 to 6: pack yourself, get three estimates, prepare access

Pack yourself. Packing labor and materials are their own line on the estimate, and it is the one line you can delete entirely. A studio takes about 27 boxes and a 2-bedroom about 61; buying everything new runs roughly $100–$150 for a studio and $350–$500 for a four-bedroom home, with tape at $3–$6 per roll and one roll per 15–20 boxes. Three written estimates after a survey. Interstate movers must give a written estimate after an in-person or virtual survey. Three surveys give you three weight guesses, and the outlier tells you who is wrong. Choose a binding estimate where you can; with a non-binding one the mover may collect up to 110% of it at delivery, and the difference is explained in binding vs non-binding estimates.

Prepare access. Long carries, stair charges, elevator time, shuttles and waiting time are billed per event on top of the transport price. A parking permit, a booked elevator and an honest answer about whether a tractor-trailer can reach your street cost little or nothing; the fees do not. The full list is in hidden moving costs.

7 to 10: dates, hybrid moves, valuation and deposits

Flexible dates. Movers price on weight and distance, but they sell capacity, and capacity is scarce when everyone moves at once: summer, month-ends and weekends. A mover with an empty return leg or a gap mid-month has a reason to sharpen a quote, and the only way to find out is to offer two or three pickup windows and ask. We do not publish a seasonal discount because we cannot source one; the demand logic is set out in best time of year to move.

Hybrid moves. You rent the truck and drive; movers load at one end and unload at the other, billed by the hour as labor-only. The model’s labor-only row for a 3-bedroom local job is $525–$1,020 for a full day of loading and unloading, and loading alone takes less than that. No commercial driver’s license is needed for a consumer rental truck, since every one has a GVWR under 26,001 lb. Whether the rental, fuel and your days on the road beat the container row is the calculation to run before you commit.

Released value. Full value protection is the default and carries a charge; released value costs nothing extra and pays 60 cents per pound per article. A 100 lb dresser pays $60 whatever it cost you. Choose released value only if what you are shipping is genuinely worth about that, and read moving insurance vs valuation first.

Deposits. A deposit does not reduce the price; it moves your money out of your control before a truck exists. Licensed carriers collect at delivery, up to the binding amount or 110% of a non-binding estimate, with any balance due within 30 days.
