Junk Removal, and What Not Moving It Saves

Every mover prices on the size of the load, so the cheapest cubic foot to move is the one you leave behind. These guides put a number on decluttering, explain how junk removal is priced, and cover the disposal rules for the things you cannot just put on the curb.

The saving is the step between home-size classes. In our model a three-bedroom home moving 1,000 miles is $5,175 – $6,900 and a two-bedroom is $4,500 – $6,000, so a household that clears enough to be surveyed as the smaller class saves $675–$900 on transport alone. On a local move the same clearing is hours off the clock.

Junk removal itself is priced three ways: by the fraction of a truck your load fills, per item for single pickups, or by dumpster size and weight if you rent a roll-off and do the carrying. None of those has a published model here, so the guides explain the structure and what to ask rather than quote figures.

Some things cannot go in the truck or on the curb. Refrigerators and air conditioners must have their refrigerant recovered before disposal under federal rules; several states require electronics and mattresses to go through recycling programs; paint has its own take-back scheme in the states that run one. The disposal guide below lists the route for each item type.

What to know before you start

The five things that decide most of the outcome in this part of a move, in the order you will meet them.

  1. 1

Declutter before the survey, not after

The estimate is built on what the surveyor sees. Clear the garage, the spare room and the storage unit before the walk-through and the weight estimate drops with them. Clearing afterwards saves nothing on a binding estimate.

  2. 2

Four exits, in order of return

Sell what has value, donate what a charity will collect, put what the city will take out for bulk pickup, and pay for removal of the rest. Junk removal is the last resort because it is the only one that costs money.

  3. 3

Truckload pricing is quoted on site

Most junk removal firms price by how much of the truck your load fills, which is why phone quotes are ranges and the real number comes at the door. Photograph the pile and ask for a written figure before they load.

  4. 4

    Appliances and electronics have rules

Refrigerant must be recovered before a fridge or air conditioner is scrapped, and the final disposer is responsible for it. Electronics and mattresses are covered by recycling laws in a number of states. Ask the hauler where each item goes.

  5. 5

The month before is the window

Sales take weeks, donation pickups need booking, bulk pickup runs on a schedule. A four-week timeline, room by room, gets it done before the surveyor arrives.

Junk Removal: questions people ask

How much does junk removal cost?

It is priced by the fraction of a truck your load fills, per item for single pickups, or by dumpster size and weight if you rent a roll-off. We do not publish a model for it; get the written figure at the door before anything is loaded, and ask whether disposal fees are included.

Does decluttering really lower a moving quote?

Yes, when it moves you down a home-size class at the survey. At 1,000 miles the step from three bedrooms to two is worth $675–$900 in our model on transport alone, and on a local move it is hours off the crew's clock.

How do I get rid of furniture before a move?

Sell it if it has value, book a donation pickup if a charity in your area collects, use the city's bulk-item pickup for what is left, and pay a junk removal firm only for what none of those will take. Start a month out; each route has a lead time.

Can I throw away a refrigerator?

Not on the curb as it stands. The refrigerant must be recovered first, under federal rules, which is why cities, utilities and retailers run appliance pickup programs. The disposal guide in this section covers appliances, electronics, mattresses and paint.

Will movers take junk away?

Generally not. Movers carry what is on the inventory to the destination; disposal is a separate service from a separate business, or from the city. Some movers can arrange it through a partner, billed separately.
