The expensive mistakes in a move are made early: booking without a survey, paying a deposit to a company you have not checked, choosing a peak weekend when a weekday would do, and leaving the packing to the day the crew arrives. Each one is avoidable if it is on a list eight weeks out, and none of them is fixable the week of.
The cheap mistakes are made late: mail that never gets forwarded, a driver's license that lapses, a utility account that keeps billing an empty house, a prescription that cannot be refilled in the new state. Book the crew before you book the truck
Movers, container companies and rental fleets all sell out around month-ends and summer weekends. Once the moving date is fixed, the crew is the first call; everything else in the plan hangs off it.

Move on a weekday if you can
Demand peaks on Fridays, weekends and the last days of the month, when leases turn over. Flexible dates are a negotiating lever with any mover, and mid-month, mid-week is where the flexibility is.

One essentials box travels with you
Medications, chargers, documents, a change of clothes, basic tools, toilet paper and the kettle. On a long-distance move your shipment may arrive days after you do; on a local move the last box off the truck is the one you need first.

Photograph everything before it is packed
Time-stamped photos of furniture, electronics and the state of both homes are the evidence a damage claim or a deposit dispute turns on. Ten minutes with a phone, before the tape comes out.

The admin has state-set clocks
Driver's license and registration deadlines start when you arrive in a new state and range from days to months. Voter registration, part-year tax returns and professional licenses have their own. Put them on the same list as the utilities.

How far in advance should I book movers?
Eight weeks gives you time for three surveyed estimates and a choice of dates. Four weeks is workable outside the summer peak. Under two weeks you will pay for whatever is left, and in June through August that can mean no full-service crew at all.
What is the cheapest day to move?
A weekday in the middle of the month, outside summer. Weekends and month-ends are when leases turn over and every crew is booked, so that is when quotes are firmest and discounts disappear. Ask each mover which of your possible dates is cheapest; the answer is often a different day.
What should I do first when planning a move?
Fix the date, run the route through the cost calculator so you know what a fair quote looks like, and book three surveys. Everything else in the checklist is easier once you know the budget and the crew.
How do I change my address when I move?
USPS mail forwarding first, because it catches what you forget. Then the DMV, the IRS, Social Security if you receive benefits, your employer, banks, insurers and voter registration. The change-of-address checklist in this section lists them in the order that matters.
What should I not pack on the moving truck?
Documents, medications, cash, jewelry and anything you would need before the truck arrives travel with you. Movers also refuse hazardous items such as propane, paint and aerosols, and most will not carry plants or perishable food on a long-distance move.
