State-to-state moving cost questions

How much does it cost to move to another state?

Interstate moves are priced on driving distance and the weight of your shipment, which we approximate from home size. A two bedroom home moving 500 miles runs about $2,250 – $3,000; the same home moving 1,500 miles runs about $6,750 – $9,000. A three bedroom house crossing the country, roughly 2,500 miles, comes to about $12,938 – $17,250. Packing, storage and specialty items sit on top of those figures.

Does the cost change depending on which states I move between?

Mostly through distance rather than state lines. What the states themselves change is the local end of the job — labour rates, parking and permit rules, building access and how far the crew has to carry. Crossing a state border also makes the move federally regulated, so the carrier needs active USDOT authority, and you are entitled to a written estimate and a published complaint record.

What counts as a local move rather than an interstate one?

For pricing, anything under about 100 miles is billed by the hour rather than by weight and mileage, even if it crosses a state line. For regulation, any move that crosses a state line is interstate and falls under the FMCSA regardless of distance. A 40 mile move across a border is therefore priced like a local move but regulated like a long distance one.

When is the cheapest time to move between states?

Mid-week, mid-month, between October and April. Summer is the industry’s peak season, and demand sets the price: a carrier quoting a summer Saturday has less room to negotiate than one quoting a Tuesday in February.
