Local Moving,Billed by the Hour
Under about 100 miles the mileage formula does not apply. You are paying for a crew's time, and everything that speeds up or slows down that crew changes the bill. These guides show the math and how to control it.

A local move is crew size × hours on site × an hourly rate per mover, plus a flat travel fee for getting the truck to you and back. In our model a full-service crew bills $40–$50 per mover per hour and the travel fee is $75, so a studio with two movers for two to three hours is $235 – $375 and a four-bedroom house with four movers for eight to ten hours is $1,355 – $2,075.
The distance between the two addresses barely registers. What does register is everything that adds minutes: boxes still open when the crew arrives, furniture that needs disassembling, a third-floor walk-up, an elevator that has to be reserved, a truck that has to park a block away. Most of a local bill's variance is in the hours, and most of the hours are in your hands.
Local moves are regulated by the state, not by the federal government, so the rules on estimates, licensing and complaints vary. The guides in this section cover the hourly math, apartment moves with their certificates of insurance and stair fees, and the questions that separate a good crew from a cheap one.

What to know before you start
The five things that decide most of the outcome in this part of a move, in the order you will meet them.
- 1
Hours, not miles
A five-mile move and a forty-mile move in the same metro usually cost the same. Compare two local quotes on crew size and hourly rate, then ask each company how many hours it expects, and why.
- 2
Be packed before the truck arrives
Every box a mover packs on the day is billed at the hourly rate. Sealed, labeled and stacked by the door is the single cheapest thing you can do for a local move.
- 3
Apartments cost more per box
Elevators need reserving and padding, buildings demand a certificate of insurance from the mover, and stairs and long carries either slow the crew or appear as separate fees. Sort the building's rules a week ahead.
- 4
The state sets the rules
Local moves fall under state regulators, some strict, some absent. Check the state licence, and in California the double drive time rule sets how travel is billed. The FMCSA register still helps: many local movers hold interstate authority too.

Tipping is customary but not a rate
Tips for local crews are common and are not built into the hourly price. The tipping guide below gives a sensible range by job length; a cold drink and a clear path help just as much.
Local Moving: questions people ask
How much do local movers cost per hour?
In our model a full-service crew bills $40–$50 per mover per hour, so a two-person crew is $80–$100 an hour and a four-person crew $160–$200. Labor-only crews that load a truck or container you supply sit lower. Add a travel fee of about $75.
How long does a local move take?
Two to three hours for a studio, 5 to 7 for a two-bedroom, 8 to 10 for a four-bedroom house with a four-person crew, all on site. Unpacked boxes, stairs and disassembly push those numbers up.
Do local movers charge for travel time?
Yes, usually as a flat travel fee or as one extra hour on the bill. It covers getting the truck from the yard to your door and back. In California the regulated version of this is called double drive time.
Is it cheaper to rent a truck for a local move?
On the transport line, yes. But a two-bedroom local move with movers is $475 – $775 in our model, and the rental, fuel, pads, dolly and a day of your own lifting close much of that gap. It comes down to how much you own and who is doing the carrying.
Should I tip local movers?
It is customary, not compulsory. A modest amount per mover for a half-day job and more for a full day is typical, paid in cash at the end, split evenly. Water on a hot day and a clear path to the truck are the other things crews remember.
