Storage-in-transit is the mover holding your shipment in its own warehouse between pickup and delivery. Your goods stay under the mover's liability terms, they are handled by the same company end to end, and you pay for the handling in and out plus a charge for the time. Tariffs cap how long it can last before it converts to permanent storage, so ask for the limit.
Self-storage is a unit you rent month to month and fill yourself. It is flexible and it is yours to visit, but everything is handled twice more, it sits under your own insurance rather than the mover's, and the unit size is your decision: from a 5 × 5 closet to a 10 × 30 garage, with the box count as the guide.

Who is liable decides a lot
In storage-in-transit your goods stay under the mover's valuation terms. In a self-storage unit they are under whatever insurance you arranged, and many facilities require some. Check both before choosing on price alone.
