How every route is priced
Past 100 miles: distance × a home-size factor × a service rate, shown as −10% to +20% around the result because moves overrun more often than they come in under. The effective rate per mile by home size:
| Home size | Full-service | Container | Freight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | $3.75 / mi | $2.70 / mi | $1.80 / mi |
| 1 bedroom | $4.50 / mi | $3.24 / mi | $2.16 / mi |
| 2 bedrooms | $5.00 / mi | $3.60 / mi | $2.40 / mi |
| 3 bedrooms | $5.75 / mi | $4.14 / mi | $2.76 / mi |
| 4 bedrooms | $6.50 / mi | $4.68 / mi | $3.12 / mi |
| 5+ bedrooms | $7.50 / mi | $5.40 / mi | $3.60 / mi |
Inside 100 miles the model switches to hourly billing, because that is how movers actually charge locally. The whole thing is documented on the methodology page; the calibration of the distance estimate is there too.
Moving routes FAQ
How much does a long-distance move cost?
From our published model, full-service movers cost about $4,500 – $6,000 for a two-bedroom home and $5,175 – $6,900 for three bedrooms over 1,000 miles, transport only; over 2,800 miles the three-bedroom figure is $14,490 – $19,320. A freight trailer you load yourself is roughly half. Every route page on this site prices its own distance with the same model.
What counts as a long-distance move?
Anything past about 100 miles. Under that, movers bill by the hour — roughly $40 to $50 per mover per hour plus about $75 travel — and the miles barely matter. Past it they price on weight and distance, and past a state line the federal FMCSA rules apply on top.
Are popular routes cheaper to move on?
Often, per mile. Corridors with steady traffic — the Northeast to Florida, California to Texas, Chicago to either coast — have trailers running constantly, so a consolidated shipment waits less and carriers price more keenly. A move between two smaller cities in different regions can wait longer for a trailer heading that way. Our model does not price this difference; it is one of the reasons real quotes spread around the range.
How are the distances on these pages worked out?
224 of the 27,854 routes carry measured driving miles. The rest are estimated from each city's coordinates using the median ratio of road to straight-line distance across the measured corridors, and are marked approximate wherever they appear. The calculator measures any specific pair of addresses.
Is this a list of moving companies?
No. It is a directory of routes and what each should cost, from one documented model. Where we show movers, they are the FMCSA's public register ordered by fleet size or Google Maps listings ordered by review count — nobody pays to appear and we recommend no one.
