How to read these lists
- USDOT — the federal registration. Look it up on the FMCSA register for the safety rating and complaint history.
- MC number — interstate operating authority. Required for any move that crosses a state line.
- Fleet — power units registered on the carrier's last MCS-150 filing. Self-reported, so treat as approximate.
- Since — the year the carrier first appeared on the register.
Questions about the register
Where does this list of moving companies come from?
From the FMCSA Motor Carrier Census, the federal register every carrier must be on to move household goods. We keep carriers with active status that declare household goods cargo and whose name identifies them as movers, and we order them by registered fleet size. It is public data, refreshed from the register (last pull 2026-09-23), and nobody pays to be on it.
Are these the best movers in each state?
No, and we do not claim that. They are the licensed movers on the federal register, ordered by how many trucks they have registered — an objective fact, not a quality score. Fleet size tells you a company is established and can staff your date; it tells you nothing about how carefully they wrap a sofa. Use the USDOT number on each entry to read the carrier's own safety and complaint record before you book.
What do the USDOT and MC numbers mean?
A USDOT number is the carrier's federal registration and is required for any interstate household move. An MC number is operating authority — the licence to carry goods for hire across state lines. A mover working only inside one state may legally have a USDOT number and no MC number; a mover quoting you an interstate move must have both, and both must be active.
Why is a company I know not listed?
Three usual reasons: its registration is not active, it did not tick household goods on its MCS-150 filing, or its legal and trading names contain none of the words we match on. Some genuine movers trade under a name with none of those words. We would rather under-include than list a lumber yard that ticked the wrong box.
Does a listing here mean the company is safe to hire?
It means the company is registered and active on the federal database on the day we pulled it. That is the first check, not the last. Look up the USDOT number for the safety rating and complaint history, get a written binding estimate after a survey, and never pay a large deposit up front.
