How our moving cost calculator works
Most people searching for a moving cost calculator want one number: roughly what will this cost? The honest answer is that no tool can quote your move exactly — carriers price on weight, capacity and the specific access at both addresses. What a good calculator can do is put you in the right range before you speak to anyone, so you can tell a fair quote from a bad one.
Ours asks for four things, because those four explain most of the variation in a household move:
Origin and destination
We resolve both addresses and measure the real driving distance, not a straight line. Mileage sets the base of every long-distance price.
Home size
Bedrooms stand in for weight. A studio averages around 2,000 lbs of goods; a four-bedroom house is closer to 9,000 lbs.
Move date
Peak season and month-end dates carry real premiums. The date tells you whether moving a fortnight later would save money.
Service type
Full-service, container or freight. The same load can differ by thousands depending on how much of the work you do yourself.
Average moving costs by home size and distance
The ranges below are what our model returns for a full-service move with no packing added. They are the same figures the calculator above produces, so you can sanity-check your own result against them.

What about local moves?
Under 100 miles the calculator switches to an hourly model, because that is how movers actually bill locally. Expect a crew rate of around $40–$50 per mover per hour, a two or three hour minimum, and a travel-time charge for getting the truck to you. A two-bedroom local move usually means two movers for four to six hours. Because the pricing basis is different, treat local estimates as a floor and confirm the hourly rate, the minimum and the travel fee in writing.
What your estimate includes — and what it does not
Included
- Loading, transport and unloading of your household goods
- Standard disassembly and reassembly of beds and basic furniture
- Moving blankets, shrink wrap and floor protection
- Released-value protection at $0.60 per pound
- Fuel and mileage for the primary vehicle
Usually extra
- Packing labour and packing materials, unless you add them
- Full-value protection or third-party insurance
- Long-carry, stair, elevator and shuttle surcharges
- Storage-in-transit beyond the free window
- Specialty item handling — piano, safe, pool table, vehicle
- Tips, which are customary but never quoted
7 factors that change your moving cost
If your quotes come back higher than the calculator suggested, one of these is almost always the reason.
1. Distance
The single biggest lever. Long-haul carriers price by mileage band, and the per-mile rate falls as the distance grows — a 2,500-mile move costs less per mile than a 250-mile one, even though the total is far higher.
2. Weight or volume
Interstate movers bill by the pound; most local and container companies bill by cubic feet. Either way, home size is a proxy for weight — which is why the calculator asks for bedrooms rather than a box count.
3. Time of year
Summer is the industry’s peak moving season. Carriers price on demand, so booking in that window usually costs more than the same move in January or February. Month-end and the first of the month are the busiest days.
4. Access at both ends
Stairs, long carries from the truck to the door, elevator-only buildings and streets too narrow for a 26-foot truck all trigger surcharges. A shuttle fee alone can add several hundred dollars.
5. Packing
Full packing is billed on top of transport, at the crew's hourly rate plus materials. Partial packing — where the crew handles only the kitchen and fragile items — is the usual middle ground.
6. Specialty items
Pianos, safes, gun cabinets, large aquariums, pool tables and treadmills are priced individually. Vehicles ship separately and are quoted per car, not as part of the household goods weight.
7. Valuation coverage
Released-value protection is free but pays only $0.60 per pound — about $60 for a 100-pound dresser. Full-value protection is the default level, carries a charge each mover sets, and is the coverage to keep on a long-haul move.
Full-service vs container vs freight
How much of the work you take on is the largest single saving available. Below is the same 2-bedroom, 1,000-mile move priced three ways. If you are comparing against a rental truck, remember a U-Haul cost calculator quotes only the truck — fuel, mileage, equipment, insurance and your own labour are on top.
Full-service movers
$4,500 – $6,000
You pack nothing and lift nothing.
Highest cost, lowest effort. Includes loading, transport and unloading.
Moving container
$3,240 – $4,320
You load and unload; a company drives it.
Roughly a third less than full service. You keep the container for days, not hours.
Freight trailer
$2,160 – $2,880
You load a shared trailer and pay for the linear feet you use.
Cheapest assisted option, least flexible on timing.
How to lower your moving cost
Move mid-month, mid-week, off-season
The same job on a Tuesday in February versus a Saturday in July can differ by a quarter of the total.
Cut weight before you get quoted
On a long-haul move you pay by the pound. Books, old furniture and the contents of the garage are the cheapest things to donate and the most expensive things to ship.
Pack yourself, but not the fragile things
Self-packing saves the packing labour. Leaving dishes and art to the crew keeps the carrier's liability intact — items you packed yourself are usually excluded from damage claims.
Get three written estimates
Quotes for the same job can differ widely, because carriers price on different bases and have different capacity on your dates. Insist on in-home or video surveys; a phone quote is a guess that gets revised upward on moving day.
Ask for a binding or not-to-exceed estimate
A non-binding estimate can legally rise once the truck is weighed. A binding not-to-exceed estimate can only go down.
Source your own boxes
Carrier-supplied boxes carry a markup. Liquor stores, buy-nothing groups and marketplace listings cost nothing.
Consider a container for the middle distance
Between roughly 200 and 1,200 miles, containers often beat full service by a wide margin if you can handle the loading.
Check what your employer or the IRS covers
Relocation packages frequently reimburse more than people claim. Active-duty military moves have their own entitlement rules.
Where these numbers come from
My Fast Movers is an independent calculator and directory. We do not operate trucks and we are not paid to rank a carrier above another, so the estimates here are not shaded toward any company. Distances come from real driving routes; prices come from a published model that combines mileage, home size and service type.
The model is a planning aid, not a quote. Always get written estimates before you commit, and verify any interstate carrier's USDOT number with the FMCSA before you pay a deposit.
Read our methodologyFrequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this moving cost calculator?
It produces a planning range, not a quote. The calculator prices your move from distance, home size and service type using the model documented on our methodology page. Real quotes vary with access, packing, season and the individual carrier — expect your written estimates to land inside the range shown, but treat the midpoint as a budgeting figure rather than a price.
Is the moving cost calculator free to use?
Yes. There is no charge and no account. You leave your name, email and phone so we can show your estimate and reply to your request; we do not sell or pass them to moving companies.
How much does it cost to move a 2-bedroom home 1,000 miles?
Our model puts a full-service 2-bedroom move over 1,000 miles at roughly $4,500 – $6,000. A moving container for the same job runs closer to $3,240 – $4,320, and a freight trailer less again — the trade-off being how much loading you do yourself.
Why do moving quotes vary so much between companies?
Carriers price differently on weight versus volume, run different equipment, and have different capacity on your dates. A truck already heading in your direction can be quoted far below one that would run empty. This is why three estimates on the same job can differ widely.
Do movers charge by weight or by the hour?
Interstate moves are almost always priced by weight plus mileage, and the carrier must weigh the truck. Local moves are hourly, with a crew rate and a minimum — commonly two or three hours. The calculator applies whichever basis matches your distance.
When is the cheapest time to move?
Mid-week, mid-month, between October and April. Demand peaks from late May through August, and month-end weekends are the busiest slots of all.
Should I pay a deposit before the move?
A reputable interstate carrier asks for little or nothing up front. A large cash deposit is the most common warning sign of a rogue operator. Verify the company's USDOT number on the FMCSA register before you pay anything.
Does the estimate include packing materials?
No. The figures here cover transport, loading and unloading. Packing labour is billed on top at the crew's hourly rate, and our box calculator prices the materials for your home size.
