Declutter Before You Move: What Each Room Saves You
In our model, dropping one home-size class saves $675–$900 on a 1,000-mile full-service move. What pushes a home up a class, and how to shed it in four weeks.

Decluttering saves money on a move for one specific reason: movers price by how much you ship, and our published model prices by home-size class. Drop from a three-bedroom load to a two-bedroom load and the full-service price at 1,000 miles falls by $675–$900, the difference between the two rows. Nothing else you do in the last month before a move changes the number that much.
That is the whole argument. The rest of this guide is about where the extra class hides, how to get rid of it, and in what order.
What one size class is worth
Our long-distance model multiplies miles by a size multiplier and a service rate. The multipliers step up with bedrooms (1.8 for a one-bedroom, 2.0 for two, 2.3 for three, 2.6 for four, 3.0 for five or more), so the gap between adjacent rows is fixed at any given distance and grows with the miles.
Here is the full-service gap between each pair of adjacent rows, taken straight from the published table (low end to high end of the range):
| Dropping from | To | 500 miles | 1,000 miles | 2,000 miles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bedroom | Studio | $337 – $450 | $675 – $900 | $1,350 – $1,800 |
| 2 bedrooms | 1 bedroom | $225 – $300 | $450 – $600 | $900 – $1,200 |
| 3 bedrooms | 2 bedrooms | $338 – $450 | $675 – $900 | $1,350 – $1,800 |
| 4 bedrooms | 3 bedrooms | $337 – $450 | $675 – $900 | $1,350 – $1,800 |
| 5+ bedrooms | 4 bedrooms | $450 – $600 | $900 – $1,200 | $1,800 – $2,400 |
Two things to notice. The savings scale with distance, so a 2,000-mile move rewards decluttering twice as much as a 1,000-mile move. And the biggest single step is at the top: a five-bedroom load costs $900–$1,200 more than a four-bedroom load at 1,000 miles.
Real interstate quotes are built on actual weight, not bedroom count, so in practice every pound you shed lowers the bill a little. The bedroom rows are the model’s proxy for weight and show you the scale. Run your own distance through the moving cost calculator and compare two adjacent sizes to see the gap on your route.
Local moves: the saving is hours and crew
Local moves are billed by the hour, so decluttering shows up as fewer hours on site and, at the bigger sizes, a smaller crew. From our local table (crew × hours × $40–$50 per mover, plus a $75 travel fee):
| Home | Crew | Hours on site | Full-service price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | 2 | 2–3 | $235 – $375 |
| 1 bedroom | 2 | 3–5 | $315 – $575 |
| 2 bedrooms | 2 | 5–7 | $475 – $775 |
| 3 bedrooms | 3 | 6–9 | $795 – $1,425 |
| 4 bedrooms | 4 | 8–10 | $1,355 – $2,075 |
| 5+ bedrooms | 4 | 10–12 | $1,675 – $2,475 |
The three-bedroom row is $320–$650 more than the two-bedroom row, and the jump is bigger than the one to two extra hours explain because the crew grows from two movers to three. The four-bedroom row is another $560–$650 up, again mostly crew. Getting a borderline three-bedroom house down to a two-bedroom load is the single most valuable local declutter.
What pushes a home into the next class
Movers do not count bedrooms; they count furniture, boxes and weight. The items below are the ones that most often turn a two-bedroom load into a three-bedroom load, or a three into a four.
- The spare room. A guest bed, mattress and box spring, a desk, a bookcase and a dresser is a full room of furniture that may be slept in a few nights a year. If you will not furnish a guest room at the destination within a year, it should not ride the truck.
- The garage. Lumber, a workbench, old bikes, a lawn mower, patio furniture, half-empty cans of paint and fuel. Movers refuse paint, propane, gasoline and most chemicals anyway, so the garage has to be sorted before moving day regardless.
- Books. Books are dense. A small box of hardcovers weighs as much as a large box of linens, and a wall of shelves fills dozens of small boxes. Keep the ones you will read again; sell or donate the rest.
- Appliances you will replace anyway. A refrigerator, a washer and dryer, a chest freezer. If the new home comes with appliances, or yours are near the end of their life, shipping them is paying to move weight you will discard on arrival. Refrigerant-bearing appliances also have their own disposal rules, covered in our guide to disposing of furniture, appliances and electronics.
- Oversized furniture that will not fit. Sectionals, a king bed, a piano, a treadmill. Measure the destination rooms and doorways before you pay to ship a piece you will sell on arrival.
- Storage that has been storage for years. Bins in the attic, basement or a closet that have not been opened since the last move are the easiest cut, because you already know you do not use what is in them.
The test for every large item is the same: would you pay to buy this again at the other end? If not, it is cheaper not to ship it.
The four exits
Everything you cut leaves the house one of four ways. Pick by item value, weight and how much time you have.
- Sell. Best for furniture in good condition, working appliances, exercise equipment and anything with a brand name. Local marketplace listings move fast if the price is low and the buyer collects. Start early; selling takes weeks, and unsold items need one of the other three exits.
- Donate with pickup. National and local charities run scheduled pickups for furniture and household goods in good condition. Check the accepted-item list first: many will not take mattresses, particleboard furniture or anything stained or broken, and pickup slots book out in advance.
- Municipal bulk pickup. Many cities and counties collect bulky items at the curb, either on a schedule or by appointment, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee. Rules on what qualifies, how much and how it must be set out vary by municipality, so look up yours before you drag a sofa to the curb.
- Junk removal. A crew shows up, carries everything out and hauls it away in one trip. It is the fastest exit and the only one that handles the heavy, the broken and the mixed pile, which is why it is priced by the fraction of a truck you fill. How that works is explained in how junk removal pricing works, and the junk removal hub covers what is and is not accepted.
The order matters. Sell and donate first, because they cost nothing and can pay you. Book bulk pickup for what remains. Call junk removal last, for the pile that is left, so you pay for the smallest truckload possible.
A four-week timeline
Decluttering works when it is spread out. A single weekend of sorting produces a half-sorted house and a lot of boxes labeled “misc.”
Four weeks out: decide and list.
- Walk every room with the test above and tag what is not going. Photograph and list the sellable pieces the same day.
- Look up your municipality’s bulk pickup rules and book a date if it works by appointment.
- Book a donation pickup for the week before the move; slots go early.
Three weeks out: sell, and sort the garage.
- Follow up on listings and drop prices on anything unsold. Buyers who collect save you a trip.
- Empty the garage, attic and basement into three piles: goes, sells or donates, hazardous. Paint, fuel and chemicals need a household hazardous waste drop-off, not a truck.
Two weeks out: donation and bulk.
- Stage donation items by the door. Anything the charity declines on pickup day goes to the bulk pile.
- Put bulk items out on the collection date. Re-list or donate anything still unsold.
One week out: junk removal.
- Get an on-site quote for what remains and book the pickup for a day or two before the movers arrive, so the crew loads only what is going.
- Recount the furniture that is left and update your estimate. If you have crossed a class boundary, tell the mover, so the survey and the quote reflect it.
Why it comes before the quote
Decluttering is the first item in how to save money on a move for a reason: it is the only saving that happens before the estimate, so it lowers every option you compare afterward. Cutting a class saves the row difference on a full-service move, and proportionally less on a container or freight move, because those rates sit 28% and 52% below full-service at every size in our model.
It also saves on things the model does not price: fewer boxes to buy and pack, a smaller truck if you drive yourself, and an unpacking week spent on things you actually use.
Questions people ask
Does decluttering actually lower a moving quote?
Yes, because interstate movers price on the weight of what ships and local movers on the hours it takes. In our published model, dropping one home-size class saves $675–$900 on a 1,000-mile full-service move, and going from a three-bedroom to a two-bedroom local move saves $320–$650 because the crew shrinks from three movers to two.
How far in advance should I start decluttering before a move?
Four weeks is enough if you make the keep-or-go decisions in the first week. Selling furniture takes two to three weeks of listings and follow-up, donation pickups book out in advance, and municipal bulk pickup often runs on a fixed schedule. Junk removal is the one exit you can book at the end.
What will movers refuse to load?
Hazardous materials: paint, gasoline, propane, cleaning chemicals, fertilizer, pool chemicals and similar items. Most movers also decline perishables and plants on long-distance moves. Ask for the mover's non-allowables list early, because these items need a household hazardous waste drop-off rather than a truck.
Should I move my old appliances or leave them behind?
If the new home has appliances or yours are near the end of their life, you are paying to ship weight you will discard on arrival. Refrigerators, freezers and window air conditioners contain refrigerant that must be recovered before disposal, so leaving them behind means arranging a utility, retailer or municipal take-back rather than the curb.
What is the fastest way to get rid of everything I am not moving?
Junk removal. A crew carries everything out and hauls it in one trip, and the price is set by the fraction of the truck you fill. Call it last, after selling, donating and bulk pickup have taken the easy items, so you pay for the smallest possible load.
How this was written. Every cost figure in this article comes from the same published model that powers the calculator, so it cannot disagree with the tool. We do not operate trucks and nobody pays us for placement.
