How to find movers near you without getting sold to
Start with the licence, not the search results
The companies at the top of a local search are the ones paying most for the click, which tells you about their marketing budget and nothing about their crews. Get a shortlist however you like, then check each one on the FMCSA register for interstate work, or your state's own mover licence register for a move that stays inside the state.
Read the complaint record
The FMCSA publishes complaints against each USDOT number, grouped by type. Estimate disputes and delayed delivery are the categories that matter most for a local firm taking on longer jobs. This record is much harder to manipulate than a review page.
Ask who actually turns up
Plenty of locally advertised companies are brokers or national agents who hand the job to whoever is available. Ask directly: will your own employees load my truck, and is your USDOT number the one on my paperwork? A straight answer is a good sign in itself.
Know the number before you call
Walk into the conversation already knowing what the job should cost. A crew of two for four hours is arithmetic, not a mystery, and quoting against a figure you already hold changes the conversation completely.
Get three written estimates
Same inventory, same date, in writing. If one is far below the others, that is not a bargain — it is usually a number that gets revised once your belongings are on the truck.

What the company lists are, and are not
A directory is only worth reading if the person compiling it has no stake in which company you pick. Ours has none: the movers on each city page come straight from Google Maps, ordered by how many people have reviewed them, with Google's rating shown as Google's. We do not re-rank them, take placement fees, or pass your details to any of them.
What we do not do is vouch for them. A large review count means volume, not quality, and we have not checked a single licence. Run the USDOT lookup before you book — it takes two minutes and it is the check that matters.

How do I check a local moving company is licensed?
It depends on where the move goes. If it crosses a state line it is federally regulated: the company needs an active USDOT number with household goods authority, which you can look up free on the FMCSA register along with its insurance status and complaint history. If the move stays inside one state, licensing is handled by that state, and the requirements vary a great deal — some states run a public mover register, others barely regulate it at all.
Is it cheaper to hire local movers or move myself?
Cheaper in cash, usually more expensive in everything else. A rental truck plus fuel for a local move often lands under $475, which does beat a two-bedroom crew. The real comparison is a whole day of your time, the risk to your back and to the furniture, and the fact that you cannot claim against anyone if a wardrobe goes through a wall. A middle option that people overlook is hiring labour only — a crew to load and unload a truck you drive yourself.
How far in advance should I book local movers?
Two to four weeks is usually enough for a local move, but the date matters more than the notice. The last weekend of the month is when most leases turn over, and good local crews are booked out for it well in advance. A mid-week, mid-month slot is both easier to get and noticeably cheaper.
What makes a local move cost more than the estimate?
Almost always time, and almost always access. A long carry from the truck to the door, stairs with no elevator, an elevator that has to be booked, a street the truck cannot legally park on, or packing that is not finished when the crew arrives. Hourly billing means every one of those is charged. Tell the company about them before they quote, not on the day.
