What turns an hourly quote into a bigger bill
On an hourly job, nearly every surcharge is really a charge for time. Declare these before the company quotes rather than on the day.

How much does a local move cost?
Local moves are billed by the hour, not by distance. Full-service crews charge roughly $40 to $50 per mover per hour plus a travel fee of about $75. A studio usually needs 2 movers for 2 to 3 hours, which comes to $235 – $375. A three bedroom home needs 3 movers for 6 to 9 hours, or $795 – $1,425.
What counts as a local move?
For pricing purposes, anything under about 100 miles. That is the point where the industry stops billing by the hour and starts billing on weight and mileage. Note that a short move crossing a state line is still priced like a local one but regulated like an interstate one, so the carrier needs federal authority even for 40 miles.
What is a travel fee and can I avoid it?
No, and you should be suspicious of a quote that omits it. The travel fee covers getting the truck from the depot to you and back afterwards. It is usually a flat charge of around $75, or an extra hour added to the bill. A company that does not mention it has either buried it in the hourly rate or will add it on the day.
How can I make a local move cheaper?
Be completely packed before the crew arrives, because you are paying by the hour for anyone waiting. Move mid-week and mid-month. Sort out parking and any building elevator booking in advance. And get rid of what you will not unpack — every box costs crew time twice, once out and once in.
Should I tip local movers?
It is customary in the US and never included in a quote. A common guide is $20 to $40 per mover for a half-day job and $40 to $60 for a full day, more if the access was difficult. Tip each mover directly rather than handing a lump sum to the crew lead.
Is an hourly quote or a flat rate better?
Hourly is normal for local work and usually fairer, because the job genuinely varies with access. The risk is that an optimistic hour estimate becomes an expensive afternoon. If a company offers a flat rate, make sure it is based on a survey and get in writing what triggers an extra charge.
